Race Gear: Carry-On or Checked Bag?

Decide which race gear belongs in your personal item, carry-on, or checked bag—and plan for the chance that a roller is gate-checked.

Quick answerRace-critical gear belongs in the personal item under your seat. A standard carry-on roller is safer than checked luggage, but it can still be gate-checked. Checked bags should contain only items you can replace, borrow, or race without.

A carry-on is not always the bag you keep

Runners often repeat “put race gear in the carry-on.” That is directionally right but incomplete. On a full flight, larger cabin bags may be checked at the gate. The most resilient system fits the complete race-critical kit into a backpack or small bag that qualifies as a personal item.

Sort by consequence, not category

Do not decide that all clothing goes together or all shoes go together. Ask what happens if the item arrives after the race. Your everyday sweatshirt is replaceable. The shoes that have carried every long run may not be. Familiar fuel can be more important than an extra outfit.

Personal item

  • Race shoes and complete race outfit
  • Medication, glasses or contacts, and body-specific support
  • Known nutrition and hydration essentials within security rules
  • ID, payment method, race confirmation, phone, watch, and chargers

Overhead carry-on

  • Second running outfit and post-race clothing
  • Warm layers, rain gear, sandals, and laundry kit
  • Items that matter but have acceptable local substitutes

Checked bag

Use it for bulk and convenience. If its delay would force you to skip the race or use something untested, the item is in the wrong bag.

Plan for security and current airline rules

Liquids, gels, poles, tools, batteries, and sharp items can be treated differently. Check the current airport, security, airline, and destination rules before travel. Do not rely on what worked on a previous trip or in another country.

Make the handoff survivable

Before boarding, imagine an agent tagging the roller. Move anything newly important—jacket for a cold arrival, medication, headphones, keys, or hotel details—into the personal item before joining the line. A two-minute transfer at the gate is better than negotiating after the bag is already tagged.
