Pack the mission, not the weekend
The personal item has a narrow job: preserve race day if every other bag is temporarily gone. Begin with a complete dressed runner, then add access and power.
Complete race kit
- Trusted shoes, socks, top, bottoms, and support layers
- Sports bra or base layer, hat, gloves, or weather-critical layer
- Bib or pickup proof, pins, timing instructions, and ID
- Medication, anti-chafe, sunscreen, and familiar fuel within travel rules
Access and power
- Phone, wallet, hotel address, and emergency contact
- Watch, watch cable, phone cable, and compact permitted power bank
- Headphones only if you truly need them to race
One-night bridge
- Minimal toiletries within security limits
- Underwear and one clean shirt
- Any item required to sleep or function the next morning
Use modules you can pull out
Keep race kit, liquids, power, and documents in separate small pouches. Security does not become a full unpacking exercise, and the hotel reset is faster. Color or texture is more reliable than tiny labels when you are tired.
Test the bag before travel day
Pack it fully, place it under a chair, and carry it on a normal walk. Confirm it fits the airline’s current size policy and does not bury documents below the shoes. The best checklist still fails if the zipper strains or the one cable you need is inaccessible.
The personal item succeeds when losing the roller becomes annoying—not race-ending.
